What kind of equipment is used?
Beginners need only loose fitting workout clothes and a shinai (bamboo practice sword). As they progress they will need a bokuto (wooden sword for kata) and when the sensei decides the time is right they will finally need bogu (armor). It can sometimes be several months before beginners are allowed to wear bogu and take part in full contact sparring.
